Our future is riding with us!

Who is NYAPT?

NYAPT is a membership-based professional association incorporated in 1976 as a “501-c-6” non-profit corporation.  NYAPT was first formed in 1974 when several Chapters from across the State informally came together to support the school transportation industry.   Our members are employed in school districts, BOCES, community and technical colleges, private school bus operators and community-based programs, and include our industry partners. Our members come from many levels within the school bus industry, including supervisors and managers, mechanics and technicians, trainers and safety specialists, dispatchers and drivers.  For more information about school bus safety in New York, scroll down.

OUR BOARD OF DIRECTORS AND COMMITTEES

    SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION IN NEW YORK

    The school transportation industry in New York State can be profiled with the following information:

    • there are more than 50,000 school buses in our state;
    • there are approximately 54,000 school bus drivers in our state;
    • school buses transport over 2.3 million children to and from school each day;
    • over the course of the average school year, our student passengers will board or step down from a school bus 1,656,000,000 times.

    FACTORS FOR SAFETY

    There are many aspects to ensuring the safety of our children who ride yellow school buses to and from school each day. This includes, but is not limited to,:

    • School bus drivers in New York State are trained rigorously through a well-developed system of School Bus Driver Instructors who are prepared by State Education Department-certified Master Instructors for such instruction and preparation.
    • School buses are purchased in accordance with extensive specifications driven by federal and state laws and regulations. In New York, school buses exceed many of the federal standards and include safety items not included in the federal standards.
    • School buses are inspected intensively twice annually by the State Department of Transportation for over 160 safety factors and are inspected on a pre-trip and post-trip basis every day by school bus drivers and technicians.
    • Qualified and trained dispatchers and schedulers strive to ensure that the bus routes are efficient, safe and reasonable to the needs of the children.
    • A network of trained certified Article 19-A examiners assists the Department of Motor Vehicles in ensuring that all school bus drivers meet stringent training requirements.

    RIDE WITH CONFIDENCE

    New Yorkers should be confident that the PROFESSIONALS in the State’s school transportation industry are doing all they can to ensure the efficiency of the transportation services and the safety of those 2.3 million children who ride our school buses each day.  Moreover, our school transportation professionals in New York are engaged in on-going educational activities to help them continuously improve their capacity to keep our children safe!
